Teaching online: a practical guide for tutors and coaching centres
How to plan, run and follow up an online class with a whiteboard, polls, breakout rooms and attendance.
Plan the lesson for the screen
A class that works in a room does not automatically work on a screen. Break the lesson into ten-minute blocks, each with one idea and one small activity. Decide in advance where you will ask a question, run a poll or send students into breakout rooms.
Set up your space
Good audio matters more than a fancy camera: use headphones with a microphone, sit near the router and face a window or a lamp. Have your slides, question paper and whiteboard ready before students join.
Open the class well
Admit students from the waiting room and greet them by name. Mute everyone on entry and tell them how to ask questions — raise hand or chat. State what the session will cover so students know what to expect.
Teach with the whiteboard
Writing by hand helps students follow reasoning, especially in mathematics and science. Use a tablet or a stylus, write large and keep one colour per idea. Save the board as a PDF at the end and share it as revision notes.
Keep students active
Use polls to check understanding, and breakout rooms for pair or group tasks. Ask students to explain a step in their own words. Active students retain more and are less likely to drift to other tabs.
Handle weak connections kindly
Some students will have unstable internet. Allow them to turn video off to keep audio clear, and share notes afterwards. Never penalise a drop in connection.
Close and record attendance
Summarise the lesson, give one task and end on time. Download the attendance report for your records, and send notes or the saved whiteboard to students and parents.
