Remote meeting etiquette that actually helps
Simple habits that make online meetings shorter, clearer and kinder.
Send an agenda
Share a short agenda with the invite: the goal, the topics and who needs to decide what. People arrive prepared, and the meeting ends sooner.
Join early, test audio
Join five minutes before the start to test your microphone, camera and connection. Use headphones to avoid echo.
Mute when not speaking
Background noise breaks concentration. In a larger meeting, the host can mute people on entry, and speakers can unmute when they have something to say.
Use chat and raise hand
Use chat for links and quick questions and raise hand to ask to speak. This keeps the conversation orderly without interrupting.
Make decisions visible
Capture decisions and owners in chat or on the whiteboard so everyone sees the same record. End the meeting by reading them out.
End on time and follow up
Stop at the agreed time. Send a short summary the same day with actions, owners and dates.
